Burnout to Bliss

Burnout to Bliss is an awakening experience that occurred over two years, 1989-1991. Dr. Young’s transforming journey from Burnout to Bliss is told in a series of stories, each emphasizing a particular concept — from the madness of extreme BURNOUT to regaining lost confidence and self-esteem (CYCLING in the CITY) to surrendering in faith for the remaining 18 months when she had to leave her sanctuary with only the balance of one small paycheck (2 Years 1 Paycheck 0 Plans — a story of healing).

Book 1, BURNOUT – How a Desert Lizard Restored My Faith, illustrates how “it’s never just one thing” when our life falls apart, and we break down. It relates some of the psychotic episodes the author experienced and the clumsy, destructive steps she took to survive. Most importantly, it shows how real healing began when she camped with Indian shamans in Mexico, where she overcame her fear by a desert lizard who restored her faith. (December 2016)

What readers wrote:

“Very courageous story of how one woman dealt with her darkest moments. Great read for people who feel that ‘They are the only one who can do this/take care of this and those of us who struggle to set boundaries. Brave and revealing thoughts and recollections and the acknowledgment of ‘the power of validation and the gift of learning and experience.’ The author even travels with a lioness! Raw and real.” ~Avid Reader

“A fascinating memoir by a hippiesque college professor during the 1980s. Her search for spiritual connection took her through some unusual and eclectic experiences. She lived in a small college town, she struggled financially, but her life was definitely not typical, and never boring. Ms. Young has a very whimsical way of making metaphors out of almost anything, resulting in a hilarious telling of some of the eye-popping situations that she lived through and/or participated in. The book completes part one of her search in the Mexican jungle eating peyote, having out-of-body experiences, and talking with a lizard. You will laugh, you will cry, and mostly you will simply be in awe of this incredible woman and her very, very interesting life.” ~Vine

“One might think that a personal memoir of this type would be self-indulgent and fraught with angst, not to mention self-pity. Nothing could be further from the case. In fact, it reads more like a thriller than anything in the self-help genre.

The horrifying work experiences as described can probably echo to some extent with anyone, but the psychological consequences that result are exceptional, as are the approaches of the author to them. Her quests for solutions, both from traditional and very non-traditional sources, occupy most of the latter half of the book. They are compelling and unusual and make me want to see where the subsequent books will lead.

I heartily recommend this book to anyone who has a desire to examine more closely some of the eternal questions.” ~R. Parmenter

Truly an amazing story! A remarkable journey, experienced by an extraordinary soul and courageous woman. Some people think about going on a spiritual journey. Others talk about it. Then there are those who take a few steps along the path, only to quit. And then … there’s Pam Young, a true spiritual warrior who persevered and made the path her own. A path that you can follow along step by step in this eloquently written and accessible book. Its value is priceless. Its gift can be life changing. ~ Brian Hill, author of ACE of WANDS

Pam is a brilliant writer. She tells some truly inspiring, deep, and interesting stories in Burnout. I love the first-person method. I can’t wait to read Book 2, Surrender. ~ Peter B Simms

This is an inspiring and moving story with witty writing and a no BS approach. Pam tells it like it is, honestly and holding nothing back. I highly recommend to lovers of nonfiction looking for an inspirational read, especially if you are a spiritual person. Looking forward to Pam’s next book! ~Ashley Emma

Spoken in the voice of someone who’s been through it all, this no-holds-barred work lends hope to those moments of despair that so many of us–myself included– have when we experience existential questioning that life simply cannot satisfy. It is comforting to know that others have trodden the same path, have had similar inner struggles (although the externals may be totally different), and arrived at similar conclusions. Way to go, Dr. Young! ~Al D.
